The Hambara Miyadaiku Collective
Founded over 230 years ago,
carrying forward the living tradition of Japanese architecture
As the sole surviving Miyadaiku guild in the Kanto region, they have worked on historic landmarks including the restoration of Edo Castle, once Japan’s greatest fortress, as well as numerous shrines and temples. Today, they are dedicated to sharing their time-honored skills and wisdom with a wider world.
Workshop in Ancient Craft and History
Japan’s architectural tradition stretches back over 1,400 years, exemplified by Hōryū-ji, the world’s oldest surviving wooden structure. It is said that the world’s oldest companies, too, were founded as Miyadaiku guilds. In a land shaped by earthquakes and storms, Miyadaiku have inherited building techniques rooted in nature’s laws, passing down not only their craft but also a philosophy of coexistence with the natural world.
We, the Miyadaiku, are Guardians of Trees
When handling a tree that has stood for three centuries, they read its story in the rings, the form, and even its scent. A tree grown on a mountain’s outer slope is supple and resilient, well-suited for beams and girders, while one nurtured by the riverside is softer, ideal for curves and intricate joinery. In this way, every structure they create becomes an extension of living nature itself.

Authentic and fun
I enjoyed going to the Miya-Daiku workshop the best as it was a great opportunity to learn a bit about their techniques and history.
I think it was truly wonderful to have the opportunity to interact with the temple carpenter inside his workshop.
The hands-on experience of working with wood and witnessing the intricate craftsmanship of skilled artisans was particularly impressive.
